How I’m Shifting My Mindset as a Mom + The Journaling Prompts Helping Me Do It

Let’s be real! Motherhood is beautiful, messy, overwhelming, and magical all at once. Some days feel like a blur of dishes, snacks, and tiny voices, while other days leave me questioning if I’m doing any of it right. Here is how I’m shifting my mindset as a mom.

Journaling has been one of the most powerful tools for helping me become more present, intentional, and kind to myself. If you’re a mom working on your mental wellness, this one’s for you.

What Is a Mindset Shift & Why It Matters

A mindset shift doesn’t have to be about thinking positive. It’s about changing the way we see our daily challenges. Instead of viewing something as a burden, we can learn to see it as an opportunity. For example:

  • The pile of laundry = a sign of a full home.
  • The toddler meltdown = a chance to model emotional regulation.
  • The sink full of dishes = full bellies.

We’re not looking for toxic positivity. We’re looking for a healthier, more grounded outlook. And that’s where journaling has become my anchor.

How Journaling Supports Mental Wellness for Moms

Journaling gives us space to:

  • Get thoughts out of our head and onto paper AKA Brain dump
  • Reflect on what’s working and what isn’t
  • Set small intentions for the day ahead
  • Acknowledge small wins we’d otherwise overlook

It’s the reset I didn’t know I needed.

Quick Tip: You don’t need a fancy notebook. Start with what you have, or try one of the popular guided journals like Day by Day Daily Gratitude Journal.

My Favorite Mindset-Shifting Journaling Prompts

Here are a few I come back to often:

  • What is one small thing I’m grateful for today?
  • What would I say to a friend feeling how I feel right now?
  • How can I show myself grace today?
  • What’s something I get to do today that I once wished for?
  • What am I learning through motherhood right now?

These simple questions pull me back into gratitude and help me pause before spiraling into overwhelm.

My Morning Routine With Mindset in Mind

Even 10 minutes of quiet before the kids are up can change the tone of the whole day. My current setup:

  1. Tranquility – Vanilla & Lavender Pure Beeswax Candle
  2. Morning Iced Coffee
  3. Journal
  4. Peaceful background music on my phone

Why This Matters Long-Term

This 10-minute space gives me a moment to start with intention instead of chaos.

Motherhood isn’t just about raising kids—it’s about who we’re becoming in the process. The more I work on my own inner peace, the more peace I can give to my children.

If you’ve been craving more clarity and calm in your days, try journaling. You don’t have to be a “writer.” You just need a few quiet minutes and a willingness to be honest with yourself.

Colorful Gel Pens (because writing should feel fun)
I used to roll my eyes at people who swore by a good pen… and now here I am, with a pen preference. Smooth, no smudging, and colors that spark joy.
Jelly Roll Classics

Leather-Bound or Linen Hardback Journal
When something feels beautiful to hold, I want to use it more. A linen or leather journal adds that extra intentionality I love.

Affirmation or Gratitude Decks
Pulling a card each morning before I journal helps set the tone. These are a great mindset shift tool even when you only have 2 minutes before a toddler needs a snack.

💡 Pro Tip: All of these can make sweet gifts, too—think care packages for new moms, teacher appreciation, or even a little treat for yourself (because you’re doing amazing).
